This live event, a collaboration with architectural historian Ellen Rowley and (in this context) musician David Donohoe, emerged from conversations I had with Ellen, relating to her research into Twentieth Century Irish architecture.
I began by recording Ellen discussing aspects of her work, specifically her findings relating to architects Noel Moffett and Herbert Simms. I then worked with edits of these recordings and some of the amazing archival images she had uncovered in the course of her research to produce the work's video component. This was projected at a large (cinema) scale, in the presence of a large audience and the pre-recorded sound and image was overlaid with the distinctive timbre of Donohoe's DX7 synthesiser, to create a hybrid form, somewhere between a lecture, a documentary and a musical performance.
Ghosts of the Garden City was performed at Green On Red, Dublin, on October 28th, 2010, during The Driver and the Passenger.
