Volume was an annual exhibition and performance series dedicated to practitioners working with sound, which ran from 2004 to 2009 at Temple Bar Galleries+Studios, Dublin. I performed at the opening of the inaugural exhibition.
I set my equipment up at the bottom of the stairs in the TBG+S atrium space. A microphone pointing out the window on the first floor relayed sounds from the street outside the gallery to my computer. I began improvising, manipulating these Friday night sounds using custom software. In the course of the performance, fragments from this audio-stream were combined with audio fragments culled from the radio. The computer-based system auto-panned the mix from speaker to speaker on the upper three floors of the atrium space where the audience were located.
Volume was curated by Marian Lovett. This work was discussed by Brian Hand in
Turn down the staircase, the essay he wrote about my work for the catalogue
Ireland at the 26th São Paulo Bienal.
